PBS Producer to Talk about the Election at UA

Paul Stekler, writer and co-producer of the PBS film "The Choice 2008," will be on campus on Nov. 17 to screen clips from the film and to talk about the presidential campaign.


The current presidential campagin and impending election is considered on of the most historic runs for the White House that this country has ever seen.

The race between presidential hopefuls Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, is at the crux of "The Choice 2008," a PBS film written and co-produced by Paul Stekler.

Stekler will visit The University of Arizona to screen portions of his film and to discuss the current political climate.

The event will be held Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the UA's Center for Creative Photography. Stekler will also converse with the audience during the event, which is free and open to the public.

"The Choice 2008," FRONTLINE's critically acclaimed series, examines the personal and political biographies of Obama and McCain, drawing on in-depth interviews with the advisers, friends and others close to the candidates.

The series also includes interviews with seasoned observers of American politics. All together, their voices tell the story of Obama and McCain and their ascent to their respective parties' nominations.

Stekler, a nationally known and award winning documentary filmmaker, is a public affairs and radio, television and film professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Among his produced works are “George Wallace: Settin' the Woods on Fire,” “Last Man Standing: Politics, Texas Style” and “Vote for Me: Politics in America,” a four-hour PBS special about grassroots electoral politics.

Overall, Stekler's films have won two George Foster Peabody Awards, three Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Journalism Awards and three national Emmy Awards. He also earned a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
