Byron McCormick, executive director for General Motors' fuel cell group, will lecture on hydrogen and the "new DNA of the automobile" on Monday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. in The University of Arizona Student Union's Gallagher Theatre. The lecture is part of the UA series on sustainability.

A pair of experimental cars also will be on display from 1 to 3 p.m. that afternoon on the UA Mall.

McCormick says the auto industry today is reinventing the automobile using a new "DNA" that will make future vehicles more sustainable and will lead to the adoption of hydrogen as a mainstream transportation fuel.

"The new automotive DNA will replace today's mechanically driven vehicles – powered by the internal combustion engine, energized by petroleum and controlled mechanically – with electrically driven vehicles that are powered by electric motors and fuel cells, energized by hydrogen and electricity and controlled electronically."

In his talk, McCormick will address the opportunities and challenges presented by the electrification of the vehicle and the introduction of fuel cells. He will highlight why these technologies, in parallel with the development of hydrogen created from diverse energy pathways, will revolutionize vehicles and be paradigm shifting for the industry.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
