Award-Winning Author to Give UA Hispanic Heritage Month Address

Stephanie Elizondo Griest, who is celebrated for her writings, will speak at the UA on Oct. 23 as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
Several departments at The University of Arizona are collaborating to bring Stephanie Elizondo Griest to campus to speak in commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Griest, an author and speaker who has contributed to several publications such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, will give her keynote address Oct. 23. The talk will be held at 5 p.m. at Gallagher Theater located in the Student Union Memorial Center, 1303 E. University Blvd.
During the event, Griest will also read excerpts from her memoir, "Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines," which includes narratives about her conversations with individuals from all walks of life during her travels from Nuevo Laredo to Chiapas in Mexico.
The UA's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership’s Social Justice Programs and Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs worked together to bring Griest to campus.
Griest, who served as a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, has traveled to Russia, China and Cuba, among numerous other places around the globe. Recently, she earned the Richard J. Margolis Award for social justice reporting.
She also will lead a women-centered workshop, "Traveling Sola: Tips for Wandering Women," about how to travel safely.
The workshop will be held Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in Room 404 of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, which also is located in the Student Union Memorial Center.
The event will include a travel fair with information from UA foreign language clubs, the Study Abroad program and the Peace Corps, among other UA departments. The event is sponsored by the UA Parents & Family Association, Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, the Women’s Resource Center and the Associated Students of the UA.
