The James E. Rogers College of Law is bringing a number of speakers to the University this fall to speak on topics such as military sentencing, immigration and the criminal justice system.

Researchers and doctoral degree candidates from institutions across the nation will visit the James E. Rogers College of Law this semester for a series of legal talks.

On Oct. 1, The University of Arizona college's Program in Criminal Law and Policy, or PCLP, will launch the speaker series, which will include conversations about scholarly work and lawyering.

The lunchtime speaker series, which was established in 2005, has become quite popular, drawing a range of students, faculty and community members to the sessions. Arizona attorneys may qualify for continuing legal education credit for attending the talks.

The lineup of speakers are:

  • Michael Moore, the Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Chair and co-director of the Program in Law and Philosophy at the University of Illinois College of Law. Moore will speak Oct. 1 on the limits of liberty on the reach of criminal legislation. His presentation is co-sponsored by the Federalist Society.
  • Patricia Breen, a doctoral law degree candidate at the University of Maryland. Breen will speak Oct. 8 about trial penalty and the plea discount in military sentencing.
  • Kara Hartzler, of the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project. Hartzler's Oct. 15 talk is titled, "The Intersections in Immigration and Arizona Law: How Possession of Paraphernalia Could Ruin the Phoenix Suns' Chance for a 2009 NBA Championship." Her presentation is co-sponsored by the Bacon Immigration Law Program.
  • Kristen Kelly, a UA College of Law 2003 graduate and deputy Pima County attorney will speak Oct. 29 on prosecuting sex crimes.
  • Stephanos Bibas, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Bibas' talk will be held Nov. 4. His lecture is titled, "Originalism and Formalism in Criminal Procedure: The Triumph of Justice Scalia, the Unlikely Friend of Criminal Defendants?" The talk is co-sponsored with the Federalist Society.
